We ambled through the park,
capturing our youthful shyness
and the prolonged, captivating stares
as our tongues danced behind our lips.
We paused before speaking over one another.
Awkwardness soaked us like a damp sweater
in a Georgia summer.
But it was autumn in Seattle,
and the spark of our kiss shocked short circuits in traffic lights
as people crashed into parked regrets,
posing as the victim, appealing insurance to pay
the price for my reckless driving,
falling headfirst into love;
a love that I’d love to last for longer than the cat
that stole my breath as she breathed in the sky.
We sped through life’s lessons
without pumping the brakes,
leaving us with the solace of fate.
