Cost Of Acceptance

Her father said I wasn’t worth a silver dollar.
I couldn’t afford to print my own name,
let alone hers, on a marriage certificate.
But we’ve made it this far with pennies to our name.
Her mayor of a father couldn’t stand
my guts and hers for marrying me.
But with me, she was to be.
If he doesn’t accept us,
he’ll never see his granddaughter as more
than a priceless reflection of his regret.
