Pity For Company

A woman I watched, opposite side of the diner, didn’t see me. I spilled my envy over spying on her internet date. He reached, but she pulled her hand back, mouthing: “I shouldn’t be here.” My eyes welled, and relief skated over the frozen lake that is my heart’s beat. A shadow centered me. I lifted my gaze to the woman I took pity on across the room, asking if I wanted company.
