An Engagement Memory

Let’s make memories
of undying love.
Our packed bags
rest by the door.
We’ve been here before,
believing the short time
spent together gathered
whisky rumors of altruistic
roses through our bones
that never want to go home,
reliving dreams between sheets
where we made love,
found our pride and the affection
we’d missed from our youth.
With each passing night,
I envisioned a life with you,
and our nerves calm in the arms
of the other.
I spoke against vain love.
I said too much
when all I really wanted to know
is, will you marry me?
