Beth’s Withdrawals

As dusk descended, the mistakes
of the day were forgotten.
An evergreen candle dances
through flickered on a stand,
weighing documents below,
the wax puddles beneath its wick.
I had to face it;
Beth was gone.
She gave her heart to another,
a man much better suited for her
taste of fine wine.
I lowered myself to a chair,
reading the papers through tears.
Beth hated my flaws but said
being without me was like
going through withdrawals.
Beth will return,
promising repentance.
As if only I were to know,
Beth came home yesterday.
I nursed her back to health,
making sense of her hesitation
for commitment because another
mistake Beth knows I’m not.
