Teenage Parents

My breath suffocated me
like a burglar
as the night’s darkness
mercilessly robbed a
Temecula, California,
evening of its glory.
Just my luck,
I mused as I handled
the shattered screen
of my watch to tap the lens.
The battery stopped functioning
at two o’clock.
Jenna stood up,
saying nothing.
She took off the dark-brown
leather bag.
Jenna’s fingers trembled;
my eyes traveled her
insecurity, handing me a
positive pregnancy test
Wiping her wet eyes,
and I knew it was permanent.
