Our paths crossed in the arms of another
lover, giving the other a sultry once-over.
Unhappy with life;
unhappy with growing old
with the person we’d called our own.
But a Christmas party
brought us a surprise,
a gift of an unbreakable fascination.
We excused ourselves
to the balcony.
The winter’s bite whipped through
our coats, drawing us closer.
Snowflakes touched our noses;
we chatted while our tipsy companions
intermingled with visitors
for whom we couldn’t have cared less.
No clue we’d find the gift
we needed at a party I attended
to stop my old flame from bitching.
But this woman was tantalizing.
Her oval, green eyes sparkled
brighter than the Christmas lights
gleaming on besieging homes.
A home we’d soon own.
