I crunched over swathes of layered
golden-brown leaves
from skeletal hickory trees
as I strolled through Diamond Park
with my hands in my jacket
pockets.
The sunset carried
an evening chill that bit my lips.
My heart burned with solitude like
heat weathering unchartered territory.
“Excuse me,” a voice said.
I stood and twisted around,
arching an incredulous brow.
“Can I help you?” I swallowed hard.
She wrapped her long, red hair
around her neck.
“I see you here often.”
“Stalker much?” I mocked
She grinned. “Mind if I walk with you?”
A decade has passed since then,
… and here we are, strolling
through this crazy life together.
