I staggered along a sidewalk
on a side street, broken bulbs
in streetlights shimmered
shadows of what’s better left unsaid.
I skipped crooked cracks
with bad luck in mind,
wearing a black eye,
her fist didn’t miss a swing,
a shirt stained with mud,
gravel embedded in my knees
from praying that she wouldn’t leave.
The sunset turned the dial back
to what tomorrow
we’ll call a new beginning.
