Shy October Love

We’d spent an autumn night
in her grandfather’s barn;
muttering sweet nothings
like lovers under covers.
Nerves washed through my stomach
my mouth twitched, holding back
the words I couldn’t bear to speak,
not to your face, not at all.
The shame I feel tells me
this plot twist is real.
